5 Users, Single PC - Reverse KVM Switch

by Jack
(Bhavnagar, India)

I have a single PC with a 2.93 MHz processor, 1GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive that I want to share between 5 users with their own monitor / desktop setup.

Do you have any tips or guidance on how I may do this?

Thanks

Jagdish

PC Tips and Tricks Answers:

Hi Jack,

Yes, indeed there is a way to connect multiple users to a single PC!

If you've read our article 'Two Computers One Monitor - Yes you can!' which describes the use of a KVM Switch to operate multiple PCs from one keyboard, mouse and monitor setup, then you may have wondered if it's possible to reverse this and operate one PC from multiple desktop setups.

Well, there is such a thing as a 'Reverse KVM Switch'!

This allows multiple users to share one computer simultaneously - just what you're looking for!

Belkin offer a simple two user device but there are other manufacturers out there who offer 4 user and beyond Reverse KVM Switches.

KVM Switch Direct - http://kvmswitchdirect.co.uk - offer a 4 user version by Adderview called the 'Prism 4 Point Reverse KVM Switch'.

Ideal for resource sharing, it enables you to connect multiple KVM (Keyboard, Video monitor and Mouse) consoles to a single computer or KVM Switch.

Rose Electronics - http://rose.com - offer what they call 'Multi User' KVM switches which allow multiple users to remotely access and control multiple PCs.

There are many more offering similar versions.

So, as you can see, there are lots of options open to you and hopefully we have pointed you in the right direction to help you solve your multi user to single PC problem.

Best regards

Colin
