Acer F20 Monitor Problem

Acer F20 Monitor Highlighted Areas

I have a problem with my Acer F20 monitor, the lcd panel looks like the liquid crystals are leaking. One morning I switched it on and it looked like blue paint runs from the top of the screen. Later, after it warmed up, these runs became less visible, but I can still see a shadow of them if I set a light grey background. Any idea of what could be wrong?

PC Tips and Tricks Answers:

Hi Robert,

Oh dear, doesn't sound too good Robert. That's a nice screen you have
there - the Ferrari red 20" LCD I believe :)
Sounds very much like your monitor screen could be cracked or broken
with the liquid crystals bleeding or leaking out behind the glass.
Could it have been dropped or maybe someone dropped something on it
causing a crack in the screen just above the screen edging fascia.
Without actually seeing it it's difficult to tell.
However, the fact that it disappears as the screen warms up makes me
wonder whether it couldn't simply be condensation?
Sometimes moisture can get trapped within the screen. Has it been near
water? Could someone have spilt water over it? Has it been in the sun
and then cooled in an air con environment or vice versa?
Perhaps someone has been sat with a hot steaming coffee near to the
screen that could have caused condensation to enter and become
trapped?
Could water have entered via a cable connection? I seem to think this
model has a TV tuner input?
The fact that the color is blue is rather interesting.
Maybe you could send us a picture - as they say, a picture is worth a
thousand words :)

All the best

Acer F20 Monitor Problem
by: Robert

Hello Colin,
Thank you for your response and suggestions. I have attached a picture of the screen (taken a few months ago, the drips are not as visible at the moment), and I think it could be a condensation problem, because of the fact that it disappeared after warming up. The monitor does not see sun at all. I once used a damp microfiber cloth to wipe the screen an I guess the moisture might have worked its way under the bezel and into the panel. Usually I only wipe the screen with a dry microfiber cloth. The weather was below freezing and I don't have a heater in the office where the monitor is. When I switched the monitor on in the morning I spotted the problem.
I logged a technical call to Acer just after the problem appeared a few months ago, and they said I should take it in to be looked at. A couple of days before the guarantee expired I took it in to Acer South Africa. I took the screen in its original packaging, which they told me to take home again. This got me slightly concerned, but I obliged. They sent it to their technical workshop who kept it for a month, before I was informed that it was not repairable and they offered me a used replacement monitor. I checked the model and found out it was a TN panel and told them I would rather have my F20 back as it has either an IPS or a more likely a PVA panel (they used both types in production). It was returned to me with scratches on the screen and casing :=\
Luckily it is still working fine and the drips aren't noticeable at the moment. My wife also has an F20, and I am thinking of getting her an HP ZR30w for her photographic work and then I will have her monitor as a backup!
What I have just noticed after checking the picture of the screen and the screen itself, is that where there are defects on the lower right hand side of the screen, the backlight is shining through at those defects!
Thank you again for your time and maybe we can get to the bottom of this one day.

Kind regards

Robert
